Voters in Florida will soon decide the fate of Proposition 47B, a ballot measure designed to eliminate future ballot measures.
Supporters of the proposition argue that the state’s direct democracy system has become bloated, contradictory, and “functionally indistinguishable from a Reddit thread that got too long.”
Kara reports:
“This is either the cleanest reset button in state history or the bureaucratic equivalent of throwing your hands in the air and yelling, ‘We tried!’”
According to the voter guide, Prop 47B would:
- Suspend new citizen initiatives for a period of 20 years
- Eliminate current measures deemed “excessively vague or too rhymey”
- Transfer power back to the legislature, assuming they remember how to use it
Opponents warn that banning propositions via proposition is like “breaking up with someone by proposing marriage first,” but early polling shows the public is tired and open to anything that reduces font size on ballots.
The measure was introduced after the 2024 cycle saw a record-breaking 93 initiatives, including Prop 32F (Free Composting for Ferrets), Prop 40C (Ban AI From Dating Apps), and Prop 22Y (Change State Name to “Calizona” for Tourism Testing).
Voter Maria Gutierrez says, “I support it… I think? Honestly, I got through page 5 and just circled what made me feel calm.”
If passed, 47B will be reviewed by the state Supreme Court, debated on three late-night talk shows, and then quietly ignored by federal lawmakers who still don’t know how Florida works.
