In a recent video, Donald Trump reiterated his promise to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants — adding that future citizenship may be tied to “location, values, and whether the baby cries patriotically.”
Trump, who previously floated this idea in 2018, now claims he’ll sign an executive order that redefines the 14th Amendment based on “common sense, not outdated documents written before we had Mar-a-Lago.”

When asked for clarification, Trump pointed to a rendering of a proposed “American Verification Zone”, a concept that appears to blend a golf course map, citizenship flowchart, and Arby’s rewards program.
Norman notes:
“He’s basically proposing that being born here isn’t enough. You need to be born correctly — with proper paperwork and ideally in a home with gold toilet.”
Critics argue that birthright citizenship is enshrined in the Constitution. Trump supporters argue that the Constitution is “open to interpretation if you yell over it confidently enough.”
In a follow-up speech with his Project 2025 disciples, Trump offered examples of valid birth scenarios:
- Born on U.S. soil and live-streamed to a Truth Social account
- Born in a state that voted red at least once since 2000
- Born in a hospital lobby with a visible American flag and a Chick-fil-A within 500 feet
Children born near public libraries, vegan co-ops, or within range of NPR signals may require additional vetting.
Legal scholars called the plan “constitutionally flimsy,” while Trump called it “beautifully disruptive and a good distraction.”
As for his own qualifications? Trump claimed he was born “under an eagle,” which he said was “a sign.” However, some reports say that Melania has started to pack his bags.
